Club President Jacob Reiche,
Romaine Dunn, Stacy Grissim, Ed Racht, and Rotarian Steve Grissim

Rotarian Steve Grissim and his wife Stacy brought us the program on July 24. Joining them were Romaine Dunn from the PAWSitive Shelter Volunteers and Ed Racht, who adopted a dog, Zoe, with some not-so-subtle coaxing from the Grissims.

Romaine Dunn has been a volunteer for three years and shared with us how others can help the local animal shelters and the animals brought to the shelters.

There are two animal shelters in Franklin: the Macon County Animal Services shelter, which is operated by the county, and Appalachian Animal Rescue Center (the Humane Society).

Romaine said often when animals are brought to the shelter they are scared, and the volunteers want to help make them happy again and find homes for them.

“One of the most important things they do is socialize the animals,” said Rotarian Jimmy Villiard, who helps oversee the county animal shelter. “Some of these cases coming in are pretty sad.”

In addition to socialization of the animals, volunteers are needed to walk dogs, help with various shelter tasks, shuttle animals to vet appointments, raise funds and participate in adoption events. And, of course, they need people who will foster and/or adopt the cats and dogs.

“There are so many animals; we are overrun,” Stacy said.

Both Stacy and Ed Racht spoke about the mental and physical health benefits of being around animals and having pets in our lives. Ed said studies have shown that pets can change stressful environments and can help reduce cardiac risks.

Ed encouraged people to pick up some pet food to donate when they are out shopping.

Romaine said the shelters can use donations of pet food (dog/puppy, cat/kitten), treats, pet toys, and supplies such as towels, blankets and cleaning supplies. Cash donations are welcome.
