Macon Middle School STEM teacher Bryan Wilkinson was the guest speaker for the July 17 Rotary Club of Franklin meeting.

Mr. Wilkinson began his presentation by asking what our favorite class was and why we remember that class or teacher. Most of the answers involved classes that were engaging or interactive, classes where we got “to do stuff.”

Wilkinson talked about the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education. He said their goal as STEM educators is to give students the opportunity to learn about new technology and experience other things in the world.

His classes use project-based learning with students working on engineering projects, learning how to create podcasts and piloting a drone. He said they are in the process of creating an outdoor classroom and this year spent $16,000 to send four students to camp.
